Store Phone System – Verify MAKO & Grandstream Connections
Use this guide if the store phone is not working, the Grandstream device shows an unusual status, or you need to confirm the phone equipment is connected correctly.
Store Network → MAKO WAN → MAKO LAN 1 → Grandstream phone device
Step 1 – Find the MAKO 6500
The MAKO 6500 is the tall gray/black router used by the phone system. It may be located near the network equipment in the back of the store.
What to check: Power should be on. WAN/Ready lights should normally be lit. The ERROR light should not be on.
Step 2 – Verify the MAKO WAN connection
The cable plugged into the WAN port on the MAKO must connect to the store's active network.
Connect the MAKO WAN cable to one of these:
- Preferred: White UDR7 router – Port 1 or Port 2
- Alternative: Cisco or HP network switch – any active port
Step 3 – Verify the Grandstream connection to MAKO LAN 1
Find the Ethernet/network cable coming from the Grandstream device. That cable must plug into LAN 1 on the MAKO 6500.
Correct: Grandstream Ethernet cable → MAKO LAN 1
Do not use LAN 2 for the Grandstream unless North Star IT specifically instructs you to.
Step 4 – If the Grandstream is at the front of the store
Some stores have the Grandstream device at the front while the MAKO is in the back.
- Follow or identify the Ethernet cable from the Grandstream device.
- Find the matching cable in the back/network area.
- Confirm that the cable is plugged into LAN 1 on the MAKO.
If you cannot confidently identify the matching cable, you may temporarily move the Grandstream device to the back of the store and connect it directly to MAKO LAN 1. This is a quick way to confirm whether the cabling between the front and back is the problem.
Step 5 – Final connection check
| Device / Port | Should Connect To |
|---|---|
| MAKO WAN | White UDR7 Port 1 or 2, or any active Cisco/HP switch port |
| MAKO LAN 1 | Grandstream device |
After confirming both cables, allow the phone system a few minutes to reconnect. If the phone still does not work, take a clear photo of the back of the MAKO and the Grandstream status lights and send them to North Star IT.
