New User Setup: Sign In with Your Temporary Access Pass and Create a Passkey

Welcome to North Star! Your manager provided a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) so you can access your new Microsoft account for the first time.

Use the TAP to sign in to Microsoft Authenticator and create a secure passkey on your phone. After setup, your passkey will become your primary way to securely sign in to your North Star Microsoft account.

Before You Begin

  • Have your North Star email address ready.
  • Have the Temporary Access Pass (TAP) your manager provided.
  • Make sure your phone is connected to the internet.
  • Your phone must have a PIN, Face ID, fingerprint, or another supported screen lock configured.
Important: Your Temporary Access Pass is temporary and may be configured for only one use. Complete the entire setup when you receive your TAP.

Part 1 — Sign In with Your Temporary Access Pass

Everyone completes these first steps, regardless of which type of phone you use.

Step 1 — Install Microsoft Authenticator

Install the official Microsoft Authenticator app published by Microsoft Corporation.

  • iPhone or iPad: Download Microsoft Authenticator from the Apple App Store.
  • Android: Download Microsoft Authenticator from the Google Play Store.

If Microsoft Authenticator is already installed on your phone, open the app.

Step 2 — Add Your North Star Account

Open Microsoft Authenticator.

If this is your first time using Authenticator, select:

Add work or school account

If you already use Authenticator:

  1. Tap the + or Add account.
  2. Select Work or school account.
  3. Select Sign in.

Choose Sign in. You do not need to scan a QR code from another computer for this setup.
Step 3 — Enter Your North Star Email Address

Enter your North Star Microsoft email address.

Example: firstname.lastname@gonorthstar.group

Select Next.

Step 4 — Enter the Temporary Access Pass from Your Manager

Microsoft will ask you to verify your identity.

Enter the Temporary Access Pass (TAP) your manager provided.

  1. Enter the TAP exactly as provided.
  2. Select Sign in or Next.
Use the Temporary Access Pass. Do not substitute a password during this initial setup.

Part 2 — Choose Your Phone

Stop here and open only the section that matches your phone.

iPhone and iPad Requirements

  • Your device must be running iOS 17 or later.
  • Your device must have Face ID, Touch ID, or a device PIN configured.
iPhone Step 5 — Create Your Passkey

After your North Star account has been added to Microsoft Authenticator:

  1. Tap your North Star account.
  2. Tap Create a passkey.
  3. Follow the instructions displayed by Microsoft Authenticator.
Microsoft recommends creating the passkey directly from the Authenticator app.
iPhone Step 6 — Allow Authenticator to Store Passkeys

Microsoft Authenticator may display a message asking you to enable it as a passkey provider.

Tap Settings.

iPhone Step 7 — Turn On Authenticator for Passwords and Passkeys

iOS 18 or later:

Go to Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords.

iOS 17:

Go to Settings > Passwords > Password Options.

Make sure:

  • AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys is turned on.
  • Authenticator is selected under AutoFill From.

iPhone Step 8 — Return to Authenticator and Finish
  1. Return to Microsoft Authenticator.
  2. Tap Done.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN when prompted.
  4. Confirm that Passkey added appears for your account.
  5. Tap Done again.
✓ iPhone Setup Complete
Your North Star Microsoft passkey is now ready to use.

Android Requirements

  • Your phone must be running Android 14 or later.
  • Your phone must have a PIN, fingerprint, face recognition, or another supported screen lock configured.
Android Step 5 — Create Your Passkey

After your North Star account has been added to Microsoft Authenticator:

  1. Tap your North Star account.
  2. Tap Create a passkey.

Android Step 6 — Enable Authenticator as a Passkey Provider

Microsoft Authenticator may ask you to enable it as a passkey provider.

Tap Settings.

Android settings vary by manufacturer. If the screen looks different, search your phone's Settings for Passkeys or Password provider.
Android Step 7 — Turn On Microsoft Authenticator

Android should open the password and passkey provider settings.

Open Passwords & accounts if prompted.

Under Additional providers, turn on or select Authenticator.

Android 14: If your phone does not allow Microsoft Authenticator to be enabled as a passkey provider, Microsoft recommends upgrading the device to Android 15.
Android Step 8 — Return to Authenticator and Finish
  1. Return to Microsoft Authenticator.
  2. Tap Done.
  3. Verify with your fingerprint, face, PIN, or device unlock method if prompted.
  4. Confirm that Passkey added appears for your account.
  5. Tap Done again.

Your North Star Microsoft passkey is now ready to use.

Part 3 — Test Your New Passkey

Test Your Passkey on a Windows Computer

After setup is complete, you can use your phone to sign in to Microsoft on a Windows computer.

  1. Enter your North Star email address.
  2. Select Sign-in options.
  3. Select Face, fingerprint, PIN or security key.
  4. Select iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  5. A QR code will appear on the computer.
  6. Scan the QR code with your phone.
  7. Select your Microsoft passkey.
  8. Approve the sign-in using your phone's Face ID, fingerprint, PIN, or supported unlock method.

iPhone users: Scan the QR code with the built-in Camera app. The QR scanner inside the iOS Microsoft Authenticator app does not support this Microsoft passkey QR code.
Android users: You can scan the QR code with your phone's camera. Microsoft Authenticator on Android can also scan the passkey QR code from the passkey account screen.

Troubleshooting

My Temporary Access Pass Does Not Work

A Temporary Access Pass is time-limited and may be configured for only one use.

  • Make sure you entered the TAP exactly as provided.
  • Make sure you entered the correct North Star email address.
  • If Microsoft says the TAP is expired or already used, stop retrying it.
  • Contact your manager for assistance with a new Temporary Access Pass.
Microsoft Is Asking Me for a Password

During initial setup, use the Temporary Access Pass your manager provided.

Select Other ways to sign in or Sign-in options, if available, and then select Temporary Access Pass.

I Don't See “Create a Passkey”
  1. Open Microsoft Authenticator.
  2. Tap your North Star work account.
  3. Look for Create a passkey.

If the option is still missing, contact North Star support before deleting your account or reinstalling Microsoft Authenticator.

I Created a Passkey, but Microsoft Says It Already Exists

Occasionally a passkey can be created on the phone but fail to finish registering with Microsoft. Contact North Star support before deleting or recreating the passkey so they can review the account.

Android: I Cannot Enable Authenticator as a Passkey Provider

Open Android Settings and search for one of the following:

  • Passkeys
  • Passwords, passkeys, and autofill
  • Password provider
  • Passwords & accounts

Make sure Microsoft Authenticator is enabled as a provider.

Android 14 users: Microsoft recommends upgrading to Android 15 if the phone does not allow Microsoft Authenticator to be enabled as a passkey provider.

Once Microsoft Authenticator shows that your passkey has been added, your new North Star Microsoft account setup is complete.
